     The Medical Review Officer (MRO) provides the single most important function in quality assurance of a substance abuse prevention program. The Department of Transportation has identified the MRO as the "gatekeeper" of the drug testing process. In carrying out the role of gatekeep the MRO provides independent and impartial review and serves as the advocate for the accuracy and integrity of the drug testing process. The MRO communicates with the employer, the employee or applicant, and the other service providers. Through this function the MRO helps protect both the rights of the employee being tested and the employer requiring the testing.

     Interactive Medical Connections offers MRO services to employers, Third Party Administrators (TPA's), and hospitals. All drug test results are received electronically from SAMHSA-certified laboratories. The results are reviewed by the MRO and then reported to the designated employer's representative via e-mail, a secure Internet site, fax, telephone or mail. IMC is known for providing the highest quality of MRO services in a timely and efficient manner. We can also send all results in a secure, electronic file directly to any employer or TPA for import into their own database system.

     The MRO performs four main functions:

  1. to receive reports from the laboratories;
  2. to review lab reports for integrity and validity;
  3. to interpret lab results, including verification of lab positives after interviewing the donor;
  4. to report test results to the designated employer's representative.

     Dr. Vanderploeg is certified by both the Medical Review Officer Certification Council (MROCC) and the American Association of Medical Review Officers (AAMRO). His credentials are presented in detail in his resume.

     Although all federally-mandated drug testing requires MRO interpretation, in non-regulated testing the employer can decide whether or not to include MRO review and interpretation of drug test results. It is important to remember that, without this service, employers may face legal liability when determining the legitimacy of a positive laboratory result.
